Why did you choose your profession?
I’ve always believed in hard work, integrity, service, and doing my part to leave the world better than I found it. That’s what led me to a career where I could use my skills to serve the American people, steward natural resources, help power our economy, and strengthen communities. Whether through government service, consulting, or volunteer work, I’ve stayed committed to contributing to something bigger than myself.
Who is the one person who has done the most to shape you into who you are today? How was the person significant to you?
My late Ph.D. advisor, Dr. Randy McBride, changed the course of my life with a single conversation on a windswept Virginia barrier island. He saw potential in me during a field course and, at that moment, helped me discover the foundation of what would become my dissertation. Over the years, Randy became more than a mentor—he guided my research, taught me how to publish and present science, and above all, believed in me when I needed it most. His example shaped my own approach to servant leadership—a mindset he modeled with quiet strength and one I carry forward with intention in every aspect of my life.
What has been the greatest accomplishment of your life so far?
Professionally, my greatest accomplishment was contributing to the Deepwater Horizon response and recovery effort—a historic environmental disaster involving a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico—and later helping lead key organizational reforms within the US Department of the Interior. That period challenged me to lead under intense pressure and operate at the highest levels of government, including direct engagement with the White House, Congress, federal interagency partners, and Gulf Coast states. But what I’m most proud of is building a loving, healthy home alongside my incredible wife and raising three wonderful kids—a reminder that true success is rooted in balance, purpose, and the people we come home to.
How would your peers and team members describe your responsiveness as a leader?
My peers and team members would describe me as a responsive and steady leader—someone who listens, communicates clearly and follows through. I create space for people to be heard and supported, especially in high-pressure situations, and I’m known for staying calm, decisive, and fully present when it matters most. This was especially true during the COVID-19 pandemic at the U.S. Geological Survey, where I helped maintain stability, focus, and team cohesion while navigating evolving policies and uncertainty. Whether solving problems in real-time or offering guidance behind the scenes, I aim to be the person others can count on.
